PreS-Gr 1 These texts open with large capital and lower case letters and then show them in a variety of fonts, in American Sign Language, and being formed by children using their bodies. The books then demonstrate the use of the letter in words, and outline any special features ("No words end with soft c"). Each book features a short story in which multiple words use the featured letter. Rhyming endings limit the stories' appeal and are distracting. These are not tales that children will choose for pleasure, and teachers won't choose them for reading aloud. The illustrations are a mix of photographs and colorful graphics in a collagelike arrangement. Their sizes are not coordinated so that photographed objects are not the correct size relative to one another or to the drawn items. Fantasy situations such as a duck and dog dancing together use photographs of real animals with cartoon clothes superimposed upon them, making them appear strange. The series could be useful for homeschooling because they are similar to basic sections of alphabet workbooks, but public libraries would need to purchase the entire 26-book set for them and the value might not equal the expense."Erlene Bishop Killeen, Stroughton Area School District, WI" Copyright 2010 Media Source Inc.
The first half of each book covers common sounds, positions in words (consonants only), and letter combinations. The second half is a rhyming story stuffed with words using the target letter (some words don't match up with sounds as described), followed by a simple letter identification or phonics activity. The texts are uneven; the accompanying photo collages are silly and inviting. Review covers these Super SandCastle: It's the Alphabet! titles: It's E!, It's C!, It's D!, It's B!, It's A!, and It's F!
